Outdated & Withdrawn Indian Rupee Notes

Historical Context

Before the introduction of the current series, India issued several earlier generations of Rupee banknotes.

These withdrawn notes include the Mahatma Gandhi Series (1996–2016), classic pre‑1990s designs, and older issues featuring national emblems, traditional engraving styles, and portraits of historical figures.

Many of these notes were replaced as the Reserve Bank modernised the currency with stronger security features, updated colour schemes, and redesigned layouts.

Although no longer used in everyday transactions, outdated Indian Rupee notes remain of interest to collectors due to their historical themes, varied designs, and the economic periods they represent.

At Thecurrencycounter.co.uk, we accept a wide range of outdated Indian Rupee notes, including early paper issues, transitional designs, and denominations no longer seen in circulation.

If your specific note isn’t listed on our site, you’re welcome to get in touch — we may still be able to help.
