Outdated Estonian Kroon (EEK)

Withdrawn Currency with Historical Context

The Estonian Kroon (EEK) served as the official currency of Estonia from 1992 until its replacement by the euro in 2011.

Reintroduced after Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union, the Kroon became a powerful symbol of national identity and economic sovereignty during the country’s rapid transition toward a modern market economy.

Issued by Eesti Pank, Kroon banknotes featured influential Estonian cultural figures, writers, scientists, and statesmen, along with imagery celebrating the nation’s landscapes and architectural heritage.

Early post‑independence issues reflected the urgency of stabilising the economy, while later series incorporated improved security features and refined designs as Estonia integrated more closely with Europe.

When Estonia adopted the euro on 1 January 2011, all Kroon notes were officially withdrawn from circulation.

Although no longer used in everyday transactions, many EEK notes remain redeemable and continue to attract collectors due to their historical significance and the role they played in Estonia’s modern rebirth.

At Thecurrencycounter.co.uk, we accept a wide range of outdated Estonian Kroon notes, including early 1990s issues, redesigned series, and denominations no longer seen in circulation.
