Outdated Ecuadorian Sucre (ECS)

Withdrawn Currency with Historical Context

The Ecuadorian Sucre (ECS) served as the official currency of Ecuador from 1884 until its withdrawal in 2000.

Named after independence hero Antonio José de Sucre, the currency witnessed more than a century of political, social, and economic change.

Throughout the 20th century, the Sucre went through multiple redesigns, ranging from elegant early engraved issues to later notes reflecting Ecuador’s cultural heritage, national leaders, and architectural landmarks.

By the late 1990s, Ecuador faced severe economic instability and hyperinflation, leading the government to adopt the US Dollar as legal tender in 2000.

With this transition, all Sucre banknotes were officially withdrawn from circulation.

Although no longer redeemable at banks, many Sucre notes remain highly collectible due to their historical significance, distinctive artwork, and the dramatic end of Ecuador’s national currency era.

At Thecurrencycounter.co.uk, we accept a wide range of outdated Ecuadorian Sucre notes, including early 20th‑century issues, mid‑century designs, and the final pre‑dollarisation series.
